Meet Fugative!
He’s only 16 years old but Fugative, AKA Harry Byart, is already hot property in the music industry. We caught up with the hip pop star…
Tell us about your next single, Crush…
Crush was one of the last songs I recorded and it ended up being the first single. I worked with Younglord, P Diddy’s producer, and he sent me the track. I chopped it up, added my bits in, put the girls in and it became the first single.
The video’s set in a fairground – did you film it abroad?
No, it was done in Essex, my home town, which meant my friends were in it.
So you had your own funfair?!
Yes! I really wanted the fairground setting. It took four days to get it right, which is quite long for a music video. It’s funny actually, there was a spinning ride on set and because we were on it for 40 minutes, one of the extras was sick on it!
Have you always wanted to work in the music industry?
Yes, I started writing songs when I was eight. I was always around music in my house – my mum managed the Motown singer Marvin Gaye. But there are a lot of people who think because of that I had an easy time getting into the business. But I’ve had to work hard. Last year I did 180 shows and I was constantly on the go. I did it the hard way.
Have you always been so motivated?
Yes, that’s what I’m like. I’m pretty hands-on. I like doing music, I like the video, set design, marketing and everything. Even though I’m at a young age, I want to be involved in every single aspect.
You started writing songs when you were eight, how has your musical style changed over the years?
I was really hip-hop at first. I didn’t want to do pop. But then my label left me to myself for a while and I found I was gradually moving into dance, pop-type tracks, mixed with hip-hop. It was kind of good for me to create that sound. I’ve changed my whole image so I’m kind of clean cut now.
Where did the name Fugative come from?
I wasn’t very good in school and it was just a thing when I was younger, I was Fugative Kid. Then I dropped the kid part.
You toured with Basshunter last year – how was that?
It was scary the first time I went on stage at the 02, but now when I perform, it’s natural. And Jonas is exactly how he came across on TV! Talking about girls all the time. Typical Jonas.
What’s easier to do – small or big gigs?
Intimate is a bit harder, but it’s good. I like picking out a few girls in the audience to sing to!
How are you finding the attention from girls?
It’s cool. Girls at one of my gigs grabbed my chain and started yanking it. And they were strong! I had to pull back to break free!
Which celebrity would you love to collaborate with?
I guess Lady Gaga. She’s a legend already. She’s the first artist to have a debut album with four consecutive number 1s. It’s crazy.
Crush is out on 10 May, check out the video below...
