Medal success at Youth Olympics

Britain’s junior athletes have been celebrating their success at the first ever Youth Olympic Games.

Jade Jones won the UK’s first medal at the historic event, when she took gold in the taekwondo under 55kg category.

“It feels amazing,” she said. “You’ve always got a little bit of nerves at the back of your head, but I was confident.”

The Games are for 14 to 18-year-olds, and this first tournament is taking place in Singapore. As First News went to press, British athletes had won five gold medals, one silver and four bronze.

One of the British favourites for a medal, diver Tom Daley, was left disappointed. After injuring his triceps muscle recently, Daley decided not to compete in the 10m event, and to just stick to the lower 3m board event. However, he had to settle for ninth place in the 3m springboard final.

“It happens in sport and I just have to keep my chin up,” he said.
