Me and my brother interviewed MPs for Parliament Week

For Parliament Week 2011, FILMCLUB asked me and my brother Toby to interview MPs and peers about stories of democracy, how people like me – and people my age – can make a difference in their communities or perhaps something larger and how they think children can learn about democracy through film.

I got to interview some really kind and interesting people, including Lord Speaker Baroness D’Souza (who is the speaker of the House of Lords in Parliament) and Caroline Lucas (MP for Brighton Pavilion). Meeting Caroline Lucas was especially funny because we both live in the same area and we had a nice conversation about our home town!

Before I started the interviews, I was very nervous but excited, and I couldn’t wait to start. Baroness D’Souza told some brilliant, interesting stories which I really enjoyed listening to! She told me about how films such as Cathy Come Home help to highlight issues such as homelessness, which makes it easier for young people like me to learn about it.

She even advised me to start a debating society in my school to help us learn and practice democracy.

Our interviews have even been made into a film, which will be shown on the www.Parliament.uk/education website! I never expected to do something like this for FILMCLUB and it was such an incredible experience!
