Man jailed for attacking a goalkeeper and ruining the game

A fan of Dutch football club Ajax has been jailed for four months, after he attacked the goalkeeper of rivals AZ Alkmaar.

The 19-year-old fan ran up to Alkmaar's goalkeeper Esteban Alvarado to attack him.

However, the goalie saw him coming, tripped him up and kicked him repeatedly before stewards separated the two.

When the referee showed Alvarado a red card for violent conduct the Alkmaar coach ordered his entire team to walk off the pitch.

When the team refused to come back on, the game was called off.

The Dutch FA have said that Alvarado will not face suspension for his actions, and want the game to be replayed 'behind closed doors'.

Ajax have apologised to Alkmaar saying that the fan has been given a lifetime ban. Ajax have also asked the Dutch FA if the game can be played in front of women and children only, instead of to an empty pitch.
