Lucozade will lose its famous bright orange colour because it causes hyperactivity in children.

Lucozade will lose its famous bright orange colour because it causes hyperactivity in children.

The bright orange energy drink contains chemicals that make some children hyper, scientists have found.

The chemical at fault is called Sunset Yellow and it is used to produce the drink’s trademark colour. The people who make Lucozade, Glaxo-SmithKline, have been trying to find a natural way of getting the same orange colour – but so far they have not been successful.

For now, they must put a warning on their bottles that says: “Sunset Yellow may have an adverse effect [a bad effect] on activity and attention in children”.

A speaker from Glaxo-SmithKline said that they don’t aim to sell Lucozade to children, but to adults and people who need energy for sports.

Do you like Lucozade? If you do, will the chemical be a good enough reason to make you stop drinking it?

Please leave your thoughts below. We'd love to hear from you.

I love Lucozade especially after sports, but my mum hardly ever lets me have it. She tells me that the artificial sugars and the colouring is really bad. If she wasn't so strict about it I would drink it more because it is delicious.

I like Lucozade but my mum won't let me drink it much. Sometimes she let me have a sip of hers.
