London zoo counts all its animals

London zoo counts all it's animals

For most people in the country, this week is our first week back at work after the Christmas break. If you’re fretting about all the work you’ve got to catch up on (or homework to do) spare a thought for the keepers at London Zoo who have a mammoth job ahead of them!

This week is the annual London Zoo stock take. This means every animal who lives at the zoo must be counted and catalogued. From the teeny tiny bugs, to the big furry mammals!

There are more than 750 species of animal that live at the zoo. Each year the keepers have to count every single head in the park as part of the rules of their
zoo licence.

Last year was a pretty busy year for London Zoo, with a host of new animals calling the zoo home. A pair of aardvarks arrived and one of the zoo lions had the first cubs to be born at the zoo in ten years!

It’s going to be one busy week!
