Lionel Messi hits 50th goal of the season

Lionel Messi hit his 50th goal of the season this week, a new record in Spanish football.

Lionel Messi, the Barcelona striker scored in his team’s 2-0 win over Osasuna, breaking the record set in 1960 by the legendary Hungarian forward Ferenc Puskas.

Thirty-one of Messi’s goals have come in the league, nine in the Champions League, seven in the Copa del Rey (the Spanish version of the FA Cup) and three in the Spanish Super Cup.

With five league games left to play and at least two more in the Champions League, the little Argentinian genius will have a good chance to extend his record.

By the time you read this, Barcelona will have played the first leg of their Champions League semi-final against their rivals Real Madrid. If Barca can win that tie, they will win a place in the final at Wembley against either Man Utd or German side Schalke.
