Lifeguard dogs
BILBO the lifeguard dog has been a First News cover star on more than one occasion. Now, lots of dogs are being trained to be lifeguards along Italy’s popular tourist beaches.
Twelve schools have opened up in Italy where dogs can go to be trained as lifeguards. Each dog has a human owner who they work with to help swimmers.
The dogs have helped save several lives this summer.
Each dog is trained to jump off jet skis or boats to save people. They all wear harnesses which make it easy for people to grab on to them. It takes three years to train the dogs and they’re trained to treat the rescues like a game, so they really enjoy their work!
