Laxton Junior Primary School raises money for earthquake victims by wearing ‘HATS for Haiti’.

Pupils at Laxton Junior raised money by wearing bright hats, for victims of the Haiti earthquake.

One Monday morning in assembly, our Deputy Head was talking to us about things being fair and unfair.

She said that we shouldn’t say things were “unfair” unless it was really true. She told us about the earthquake in Haiti and said that the suffering there was really unfair and that we should remember the children who had nothing at all if we ever thought that we were hard done by.

Two of the children also spoke at that assembly and said how they wanted to be able to help by donating their pocket money. We were all asked to come up with ideas for fundraising. I thought that if we all wore a hat to school the next Monday, and donated a pound from our pocket money to do so, it would be a good idea. So that is what we did!

The whole school wore their hats for the day and between us and the staff we raised over £400. We all worked together and I am really glad that it was my idea that was chosen. It was fun being able to help and to try to bring some fairness back to at least some of the people who have suffered.
