Landslides demolish houses in China

Landslides demolish houses in China

More than 120 people have been killed in China by flooding and landslides.

Heavy rain had caused the Bailong River in northwestern China to overflow. The flood water picked up rocks and stones as it flowed downhill. By the time it hit the town it was a powerful force that overturned cars and destroyed buildings.

More than 120 people had been killed and another 2,000 people were missing. The number of people killed could have been higher but 45,000 people were evacuated from the town.

Because the town is in a remote area the rescue equipment can’t fit down the narrow roads. Rescuers are having to use shovels, picks and buckets to move rubble out of the way.

Emergency tents have been set up to shelter those who have lost their homes and belongings.
