Kids get fit with chips

School kids take part in a health-kick programme, testing out microchip running devices in the park.

Kids from our school took part in a project called Chips in the Park.

We had to be at Regent’s Park to get ready for the big try-out of the new and amazing personal timing chip device that tracks how fast you run and charts your progress.

The chip is attached to the laces of your trainers and helps you to monitor and track your running time and to chart how far you’ve run. Then you can see your results on an ipod or a laptop, so you can be competitive with yourself and it makes it fun and cool.

When we got to the park, the photographer took some pictures and we met the mascot, Ned. We weren’t quite sure what he was, but he was very funny, all the same.

The photographer asked us to run up and down the hill and get into a running position, as if we were about to start a race. This was for a practice run before the big race, and to get some snaps of us in action.

Next we were asked to run for real. Some of us were given chips to attach to our trainers. It was tiring running all day, but very competitive and great fun! It was a surprise to find that when we looked behind us, we were faster than the footballers!

Chip runner, Hugo, said: “I think Chips in the Park is a chance for young people to stop watching TV for a while and get fit and healthy. Who knows, some of them might participate in the Olympics one day.”
