Kids get cool new school

Kids get cool new school

Revamped school reopens after building is destroyed by fire.

by Chloe Nightingale, 11, Hillmead Primary School, Bishops Stortford

Our school has been through a lot these last couple of years. We have been through a life-changing fire, which burnt down the whole of the school.

Pupils had to go and learn in Windhill, another nearby school.

They were kind and welcoming and, after spending half a term there, we were able to go back to the school site and work in portakabins. They were massive.

But now we are back – back in a new school! Hillmead school building is back – after nearly two years.

For the big re-launch day, we had a ‘cutting the ribbon’ ceremony. Our head teacher, Mrs McKenzie, cut the ribbon across the door of the school and everyone cheered.

When we entered the school corridor, it brought back memories of bad and good stuff. I asked Rebecca what she thought of when she walked into the corridor. She felt very excited and also sad as she had to leave the Portakabins. Kelly was really excited and a little bit nervous.

I am really grateful to the builders who rebuilt our school and to the teachers that helped us all cope with the fire.
