Kent school takes 'green thinking' to the next level
A school in Kent has taken green thinking to the next level and installed paving slabs that convert energy from people’s footsteps into electricity.
Every time a recycled rubber paving slab is stepped on by one of the 1,100 staff and pupils at Langton Grammar School, it converts the energy from the impact. This then delivers tiny bursts of electricity to light the entire corridor.
The 25-year-old creator of the paving slab used to be a pupil at the school, which is why it is the first in the UK to install the technology.
The same paving slabs are set to help power Europe’s largest shopping centre Westfield Stratford, at the 2012 London Olympics site.
The manufacturers say the 20 slabs should be stomped on by enough feet to power about half of the outdoor lighting at the shopping centre.
One day the company hopes to place the tiles in poor countries which find it difficult to afford electricity.
