I went to Media Camp...

I spent part of the summer holidays finding out all about poo at The Ideas Foundation’s Creative Media Camp. The Ideas Foundation helps bring out young people’s creativity, and it seems there was plenty of that at the camp.

I didn’t want to spend the summer just sitting around this year. I love being creative and I thought this was a way of doing that and also meeting new people and socialising, so I decided to apply.

On our application form for the Ideas Foundation’s Creative Media Camp, we were asked to specifiy our area of interest, like animation or film-making, so each group had at least one person in it interested in a certain area. My area was leaflets and poster-making.

We were asked to create a campaign for Global Handwashing Day. The lady that came to us from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine wanted us to make the campaign more appealing to young people, and make it fun and not boring so people would participate in GHD.

We did our research and brainstormed. The next step was putting it all together and making a story board. We read our story and knew we wanted a viral campaign and poster campaign that matched.

The subject of poo became top of the agenda! During the presentation we found out how children can die from poo-related diseases and it really got to us. Everyone does it – and if you don’t wash your hands after using the toilet you are spreading poo germs.

We learnt that if you don’t wash your hands with soap it’s not effective: it’s like not washing your hands at all.

I had such a great time, and to top it off, our group won!
