I was invited to the launch of the 5 by 25 campaign
On Monday 17 October I was invited to the launch of the 5 by 25 campaign hosted by EBLEX (the people who promote Beef & Lamb). The 5 by 25 campaign is aimed at getting young people to know at least five recipes off by heart by the age of 25.
Among the many supporters, James Martin, a celebrity cook, and the Minister of skills, John Hayes, were involved in the launch.
I was on the panel, where at the beginning and end of the debates we were asked questions. To answer the questions, you either had to put up a green apple or a red tomato, based on the system of traffic lights.
The questions were based on our opinions – did we think that young people were motivated to improve skills?
Afterwards I interviewed both John Hayes and James Martin. Can they both cook spaghetti Bolognese? Apparently not, as John Hayes says: “My wife cooks my meals, but I can make quince jelly, though. I don’t like spaghetti Bolognese, anyhow”. James Martin, however, was a professional cook by the age of eight.
But why do they support this campaign? 21% of 18-25-year-olds said they hadn’t cooked at all in the last seven days, and almost 60% can’t cook spaghetti Bolognese. In fact, nearly all of those questioned couldn’t even make any of the three recipes – spaghetti Bolognese, curry or Yorkshire puddings.
The main reasons are they think it’s expensive, boring and scary. It really isn’t.
Can you cook spaghetti bolognese?
