I interviewed someone who rowed across the Atlantic Ocean

Last December, four graduates from Loughborough University set out to row 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean in the ‘world’s toughest rowing race’. Before they left, I managed to have a quick chat with the youngest team member, Greg Syndson.

When did you start rowing?

I was 13 when I started rowing at Marlow Rowing Club.

What made you think of rowing across the Atlantic?

I was inspired by a documentary on James Cracknell, the double Olympic gold medallist, and Ben Fogle, the television presenter who took part in the Atlantic Rowing Race in 2005-2006. As a team, we were inspired by the work undertaken by Spinal Research. One of the team broke his neck in an accident and had to have surgery for neck reconstruction to be able to walk again.

How have you been preparing?

Loads of emails and phone calls to raise sponsorship for Spinal Research, and hundreds of hours training – often just on my rowing machine in my front room!

What is the scariest thing about the race?

Capsizing hundreds of miles from land!

What will you be eating?

Mainly vitamin-enriched freeze-dried food. We will also be continually snacking on high-calorie foods such as nuts, fruit bars and chocolate.

What’s your next adventure?

Definitely something that hasn’t been done before – maybe even a world first! So watch this space!

Words by Olivia Morley

Congratulations to The Atlantic4 for completing their incredible challenge and for entering the record books!

They completed the race in 41 days, 23 hours and 34 minutes.
