I appeared on a CBBC documentary
Junior journalist Jonas tells us all about his first factory experience as part of a new CBBC documentary...
Nia, Nathaniel, Milly, Emma and I all entered the first factory of the five that we would work in during the episodes of Show Me What You’re Made Of, the CBBC documentary that we were so lucky to be taking part in at that time.
The scorching hot city of Jakarta, Indonesia, was where this first factory was located. The opportunity to step out of our ordinary lives and into the shoes (quite literally at some points) of workers that made the toys, clothes, jewellery and electronics that we use every day was, to say the least, an overwhelming experience.
The first factory that carved the way for the others - stuffed toys - consisted of more than 5,000 tired and overheated workers who all acted as machines for just £2 per day.
From here we moved on to the industrial country of the Philippines which is home to more than 7,000 islands!
Labouring in toy, clothing, jewellery, electronics and silk factories meant that we saw, on a regular basis, items that we ourselves wished to buy or already owned.
The system that we witnessed take place, the Trade System, made us view the world as something that was so vast in distance yet so small in resources and links.
When you watched the series and saw our incredible journey unfold, we hope that we showed you where your TV, scarf or even shirt comes from because, as the title states, we show you what it’s made of.
