I am the BT Internet Ranger of the year

Last year I won the BT Internet Ranger of the Year for Wales prize, for taking part in the Glan Afan Silver Surfers Group.

by Owen Thomas, Glan Afan Comprehensive School

My teacher, Mr Turner, asked my class if any of us would like to help with the Silver Surfers group, to teach them how to use the computer and surf the internet.

I love computers and really like meeting new people, so I volunteered straight away.

Seeing the Surfers learning and getting more confident using new technology has been brilliant, they really enjoy coming to the classes and chatting to each other and I have learnt a lot about their lives too.

I feel like I’ve achieved something when I see them going off and doing things on their own, especially as one of the members was able to ask for help in an emergency using the internet.

Winning the competition was great, not only did I win a prize, but I was invited to a big event in London, where I met other Rangers and spoke to people about what I do with the Surfers. Helping people get online is a really rewarding thing to do and I think everyone should have a go and enter the BT Internet Ranger competition this year!
