How do crocodiles swim?

Despite being rubbish swimmers crocodiles can swim really l ong distances. Find out how below...

It seems crocodiles like to go with the flow. We know they can cover long distances in the water but croc-lovers have always been puzzled as to how they did it because they are not brilliant swimmers.

Now, scientists have discovered that the big scaly reptiles actually use ocean currents to whisk them to where they want to go. The biggest crocs in the world, saltwater crocs, actually ‘surf’ currents in order to get from A to B. These crocs are much bigger than any surfboard though – they can grow to up to 5.5 metres in length. By taking advantage of fast-moving waters, these hulking beasts can travel up to six miles at a time. 20 crocodiles were captured and tagged in Queensland, Australia, in order to carry out the research which found that one particularly patient croc waited on the banks of a sheltered bay for four days before continuing its journey when the current changed direction.
