Helping animals

I watched the film Furry Vengeance, which is all about looking after the animals that live around us. It made me want to learn more about how I could help wild animals.

I visited The Riverside Animal Centre, run by the London Wildcare Trust, in Wallington, which is a rescue centre for injured wild animals, where a lady called Jan showed me round. She took me into the room where they keep the injured foxes and I couldn’t believe how bad it smelled. My first job was to help move three ducks to a clean enclosure. I even got to carry them!

After lunch I helped Jurgen, another member of staff, catch six Mallard ducklings, which we then took to a pond and released. My final job was to help Jan move two sparrow hawks into a bigger enclosure. Jan told me that they needed more room to help them develop their wing muscles.

The best part of the day was when I got to stroke Merlin, a tawny owl who has been at the centre for nearly 12 years. I had to put my finger up to his beak so he could nibble it and get to know me. Once he was happy he let me stroke the back of his head – his feathers are so soft!

I really enjoyed the day. The most important bit of advice that Jan gave me was that if you find an injured animal you should get it to the rescue centre as quickly as possible so that it has a better chance of survival.

Furry Vengeance is out on DVD and Blu-ray/DVD combi-pack now. Learn more about the London Wildcare Trust and The Riverside Animal Centre at
