Former footballer Gary Speed dies

The world of sport is mourning the loss of the Wales football manager and former player Gary Speed, who has died suddenly at the age of 42.

During his playing career he won 85 caps for Wales. Since taking over as manager Wales had won four out of five matches. He’d played for Everton, Newcastle, Bolton, Leeds and Sheffield United and scored more than 100 goals.

At the Swansea v. Aston Villa match last weekend, players held a one minute silence in his memory, which ended in applause. Fans also chanted : “There’s only one Gary Speed.”

A Spokesman for the Football Association of Wales said:“That this tragedy should have overtaken someone so young and talented is a huge loss not only for his family and friends but the nation as a whole.”

He leaves a wife and two children.
