First south west engineering challenge
In December, Cheltenham Ladies’ College held the First Engineering Challenge in the South West.
The event was arranged by our Community Links Co-ordinator, Ro Kaye, and was intended to encourage students from all backgrounds to consider higher education and courses in subjects like science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
75 Year 8 students from many different schools headed to the Sports Centre to participate in a series of hands-on activities designed to test their creativity and innovation. They were put into teams of five or six, and asked to design, build and demonstrate a model of a mechanical system, powered by electric motors, capable of recovering a crashed aircraft from a position in a sandy desert. At the end of the day students were presented with certificates.
Hannah Burne, student at Cheltenham Ladies’ College said: “I enjoyed the day enormously. I relished the opportunity to gain insights into the world of Science and Engineering while working with students from other schools and developing my communication and team-playing skills.”
