First News on tour! Week 2.
First News editor Nicky Cox and author Henry Winkler have been on the road for the third annual First News reading tour.
Henry is best known as “The Fonz” from Happy Days but is known to kids as the author of Hank Zipzer, the World’s Greatest Underachiever.
On this year’s tour Nicky and Henry have been promoting our My Way! Campaign which we launched at Downing Street back in January, supported by Pritt.
My Way! celebrates the fact that every child learns in a different way – some quickly, some slowly, some easily and some find it hard. Henry is dyslexic and found school really, really tough but he is living proof that however you learn has nothing to do with how brilliant you are – and he has gone on to become a world famous actor, producer, director and author. His hilarious Hank Zipzer books are about a funny and resourceful boy growing up with dyslexia, based on Henry’s own experiences.
Day 7 – Saturday 19 June
A busy day of TV and radio interviews today, starting off with Loose Ends on BBC Radio 4 and finishing with James Corden’s World Cup Live for ITV. Henry also took time to sign some of his books for shoppers at WH Smith in Guildford.

Day 8 – Sunday 20 June
And relax!
Day 9 – Monday 21 June
First stop was the Ursuline Convent School in Wimbledon – Nicky’s old school. As well as this secondary school, kids were bussed in from nearby primary schools too.
After lunch we went to Manor House School in Surrey. Girls who were supposed to be in PE snuck in at the back
to listen to the assembly given by us, when they heard all the laughing.
Day 10 – Tuesday 22 June
Off to north London to the Akiva School. Strangely enough there were two kids there who were related to Henry’s daughter-in-law’s friends who live in New York. Small world!
In the afternoon we headed in to central London to Fairley House, a school especially for children with dyslexia or dyspraxia. There was such a warm feeling in this school, with the loudest laughter, as the schoolkids really identified with Henry and the adventures of Hank Zipzer, the dyslexic hero of Henry’s books. The kids were living proof of the message of our My Way! campaign – that how you learn has nothing to do with how smart you are. The kids clamoured to ask such interesting and smart questions.
Day 11 – Wednesday 23 June

Off to Hertfordshire to Goffs Oak Primary School. We were joined at the school by Mr Pritt! Pritt have sponsored the First News reading tour because of their belief in creative learning. In each of the classrooms, children were using Pritt glue and roll-on paints to create posters about the messages of the campaign – that it doesn’t matter how you learn, everybody has their own way.
That afternoon we went to RA Butler school in Essex. The event was filmed by ITV news as well as other news reporters. The children were full of fun and smart questions and we all had a great time together. Both America and England were playing in their last matches in the group stage of the World Cup that afternoon so we had one eye on the scores at the same time!

Day 12 – Thursday 24 June
A big drive up to Leicester to tiny (but perfect)
Waltham on the Wolds village school. We were a little bit late because our sat nav took us to the wrong place first of all! But, though the school took a little bit of finding, it was well worth it and we had such a fun time.
Carlton Central Junior School in Nottingham was our next stop that afternoon. We met Zachary, a boy who had written about his learning difficulties for the My Way! column in First News. His school is working with the Government’s Achievement For All initiative and Zachary says it has really helped him. And there we have it. The end of another busy week on the 2010 First News Reading Tour. Catch next week’s paper to see where the third and final week takes us on our tour around the country.
