First News on tour!
First News editor Nicky Cox and author Henry Winkler have been on the road for the third annual First News reading tour.
Henry is best known as “The Fonz” from Happy Days but is known to kids as the author of Hank Zipzer, the World’s Greatest Underachiever.
On this year’s tour Nicky and Henry have been promoting our My Way! Campaign which we launched at Downing Street back in January, supported by Pritt.
My Way! celebrates the fact that every child learns in a different way – some quickly, some slowly, some easily and some find it hard. Henry is dyslexic and found school really, really tough but he is living proof that however you learn has nothing to do with how brilliant you are – and he has gone on to become a world famous actor, producer, director and author. Here is Nicky’s tour diary.
Day 1 – Sunday 13 June, Heathrow
Henry’s Virgin plane arrived at Heathrow Airport and he was whisked straight to Cardiff in the BMW tour car. On the way he needed a pee so we stopped off at a hotel. A wedding party going on there couldn’t believe “The Fonz” had dropped in and Henry ended up being in all the bride and groom’s photos!
Day 2 – Monday 14 June, Cardiff
Henry and I presented awards at the Wales Teaching Awards ceremony. Here we are pictured with the winners of the Outstanding School Team of the Year, Portfield Special School. Henry also met the finalists for the Henry Winkler Award for a school which has done great work in the special needs area.
Day 3 – Tuesday 15 June, Glamorgan
We went to Ysgol Iolo Morganwg School in Cowbridge where we met up with Ben, a boy with dyslexia who we met at Downing Street back in January when we launched the My Way! Campaign. Ben played the drums as the school sang and we had a brilliant time. We were interviewed for the school website and presented with these amazing cushions, embroidered in Welsh. Henry’s said: “Pure Heart” and mine said: “Love”.
Day 4 – Wednesday 16 June, Swindon
Next stop was Red Oaks Primary school in Swindon. Alfie, who was the first kid to write his My Way! Story for First News, goes to this school so it was great to meet up with him, along with all his friends and teachers. Alfie was interviewed for TV and was on Radio 2’s Chris Evans show, along with Henry.
In the afternoon we went to Parkgate Junior School in Watford. Henry and I were both presented with really special books, made by the children. Henry’s was The Further Adventures of Hank Zipzer and mine was First News Headlines. We were also photographed with our BMW tour car which is making travelling around very comfortable!
Day 5 – Thursday 17 June, Birmingham
Today we were at the National College of School Leaders conference where Henry spoke to 3,000 head teachers about My Way!
Day 6 – Friday 18 June, Surrey
In the morning we went to the American Community School in Cobham where 60% of the children are American and the rest come from other countries.
New Haw Community School (main picture) was our next stop that afternoon. Here we met up with Ryan, who was another dyslexic schoolboy who we met at the Downing Street launch of the My Way! campaign. Henry was presented with a T-shirt the school had made with the words “Remember How Brilliant You Are” written on it.
It was the end of a first brilliant week of the 2010 First News Reading Tour and we were looking forward to week two!
