First News interviews Disney star Sterling Knight to talk about his new film StarStruck!

Following in the footsteps of High School Musical and Camp Rock, the latest Disney Channel  movie is another music-based  hit. We caught up with Sterling Knight, the star of StarStruck!

Tell us about StarStruck!

It’s the story of a girl who’s very, very down to earth. She’s from the Midwest and she goes on vacation with her family to California, and it’s there that she ends up running into the most successful pop star on the planet, which happens to be me. They end up on this crazy adventure, running away from the paparazzi and they’re kind of getting to know each other and realising that they can help each other out, when they didn’t really expect it.

What is your character like?

Well, Christopher is extremely successful: he’s got seven cars and lives the most extravagant lifestyle you could ever imagine. And then he meets this girl who kind of comes in and says things that no-one else will say to him.

He’s a pop star, so did you have to do any singing?

Yes I did, I recorded a song for the movie, called Starstruck. It was crazy, I have such newfound respect for recording artists, it was really hard. I don’t think I’d like to be a pop star. I think I’ll leave that to people who are much more talented in the singing department than myself.

Did you have to have singing lessons?

Yeah, a little bit. I had to get back into shape. I sang a lot when I was a kid and it hadn’t really been a priority of mine, it’s not something I normally work on, so I had to get back into shape with it.

Can you tell us any secrets from the set? Did anything embarrassing happen?

Well, I fell constantly! This one day, me and Danielle had this scene where we were in this mud pit, covered in mud, so we would always try and sneak back to base camp as quickly as possible, so we could use up the hot water… but it was ice cold. No-one wants a cold shower, especially when you’re trying to get mud and plaster off you.

What’s your favourite moment from the film?

Probably watching that horrendously ugly car sink into a mud pit. That was just hysterical and probably my favourite moment.

When you’re not working, what do you like to do for fun?

Usually I hang out with my friends, I try and play golf whenever I can, that’s pretty relaxing. I’ve been catching up on some really good movies that, when you’re a bit older, you just really kind of need to see, especially as an actor. I had to go back and re-watch Edward Scissorhands to really understand the whole Tim Burton/Johnny Depp thing. Or my friend and I will get together and we’ll play American football or something. My friend is actually a very talented European football player.

StarStruck premieres on the Disney Channel on 14 May at 6.25pm.
