The tournament was held at the O2 Arena in London and saw the top 8 tennis players in the world battle against one another. Federer came through to beat Nadal in the final 6-3 3-6 6-1. The world number two was on top form throughout the tournament and produced a superb display to gain victory against his Spanish opponent in 1 hour and 37 minutes.

In a bizarre end to the match Federer hit a looping forehand winner that landed on the edge of the baseline, making the 17,500 capacity crowd inside the stadium go completely silent, as they were unsure whether the ball had landed in. The silence was then broken by huge applause as the chair umpire called game, set and match, and Federer raised his arms to celebrate the win.

It is the fifth time Federer has won the end of season tournament, but he still trails behind Nadal in the world rankings who will hope to win next year at the ATP World Tour Finals, the only major title missing from his career so far.

Britain’s Andy Murray reached the semi final stage of the event. The world number four lost out 7-6 3-6 7-6 in a close battle with Nadal. Despite the loss he improved on his 2009 result when he was knocked out at the group stage.
