Farmers must take care of countryside

Farmers should take better care of our countryside, according to a poll by the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE).

The CPRE is calling for changes, as farming can be hard on the environment.

For example, lots of animals like hedgehogs and dormice are decreasing in numbers because their habitat is being used to grow crops and hedgerows are ploughed up by tractors. Crops are often sprayed with chemicals and need a lot of water to help them grow.

The CPRE wants farmers to plant flowers on the outskirts of fields so that birds can have seeds in the winter. Other ways farmers can help the environment are by digging ponds, keeping more livestock and growing a greater range of fruit and vegetables.

The poll showed that almost 80% of people wanted farmers to have support to be more environmentally friendly.

Peter Kendall, president of the National Farmers Union, said they needed to find a balance between preserving the countryside and producing food.

This might mean using technology on tractors to make sure chemicals are spread more efficiently, or finding new crops that don’t need as much water.
