England win Ashes series

England win Ashes series

England have won the fifth Test against Australia and wrapped up their first Ashes series victory in Australia for 24 years.

Although England's victory in the fourth Test meant that they retained the Ashes, they were dying to win the last match so that they could win the series overall. They hammered Australia by an innings for the third time in this series and won 3-1 overall.

Alastair Cook's magnificent 189 and centuries from Matt Prior and Ian Bell gave England a score of 644 in their innings, their highest ever Test total in Australia. They went on to win by an innings and 83 runs, which is the first time that Australia have ever suffered three innings defeats in a series.

Cook was named man of the match and the series. The final match was also Paul Collingwood's last ever Test, and was an amazing way to end a fine career.

"It's a special, special day," he said. "I can't think of a better way to step out of Test cricket."
