England training squad for World Cup announced

England training squad for World Cup announced

England coach Fabio Capello has named his provisional 30-man training squad for next month's World Cup in South Africa.

There aren't too many surprises among the selections, apart from possibly Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher. He had retired from international football, but was persuaded by Capello to come in as cover because England's defenders have been suffering from a range of injuries.

The team will play two friendlies before the tournament. The first is against Mexico on 24 May, then against Japan six days later. The matches will give Capello the chance to see who he definitely wants to take to South Africa, and he will have to name his final 23-man squad on 1 June. England's first match is on 12 June against the USA.
