England through to World Cup quarter finals

England through to World Cup quarter finals

England have finished top of their group at the Women's World Cup, finishing with an amazing 2-0 win over Japan.

A stunning lob from outside the area by Ellen White (above) put England 1-0 up after 15mins. Arsenal's Rachel Yankey finished the job off after 66mins when she burst into the area and knocked the ball over the keeper and just under the crossbar. Two great finishes and three well-deserved points.

Winning the group means that England will now avoid Germany in the quarter-finals and play France instead. France lost 4-2 to Germany in their last group game, but will still be very dangerous.

"We know that if you want to be the best you have to beat the best," said White, "so we're happy to take anyone on now we're in the quarters."

England's quarter-final is on at 5pm on Saturday 9 July, either on the BBC Red Button, BBC Sport website or on Eurosport.
