Elephants attacked as they cross India/Nepal border

Concerns are growing for the safety of elephants after a female elephant was injured during an attack on her herd by Nepalese villagers

Indian Sukna forest officials treated an injured female wild elephant in the Kurseong forest in the India-Nepal border area after her herd was attacked by Nepalese villagers in Nepal's Jhapa district.

With the help of two domestic working elephants wildlife officials were able to tranquillise and treat the injured elephant.

This has been the last of many recent attacks on elephants by Nepalese villagers this month. Last week a male elephant was found dead under mysterious circumstances.

"We have not been able to establish the reasons behind either of the two incidents. But discussions about the safety of the elephants crossing over the border are being pursued by officials of the governments of India and Nepal," said conservation chief Atanu Raha.
