Animals bring help to those stranded in Pakistan floods

Donkeys have become the heres of Pakistan flood rescue attempts.

Rescuers using helicopters and vehicles have been unable to reach thousands of people trapped by landslides caused by the flooding. Food, shelter, medicine and clean water are all desperately needed by people who have lost everything.

But help is reaching those trapped with the help of donkeys. Donkeys are being loaded with flour, rice, cooking oil and sugar and then led by policemen along narrow, muddy paths to remote villages. So far donkeys have carried more than 20 tonnes of supplies to stranded people living in the remote Shahpur valley.

The Pakistani government say that up to 20 million people have been affected by the monsoon rain and flooding. More than 1,500 have died so far and it is feared that many more could die from starvation and disease.

With little clean water around the chance of disease spreading is very high. It is thought that £300 million is needed to help everyone whose lives have been disrupted by the disaster. The monsoon rains hit nearly three weeks ago, yet the United Nations say only a quarter of the help needed has arrived.

The British Government has given £16.8 million, with plans to give more, and the Disasters Emergency Committee has raised £12 million so far.
