Find out why Paignton Zoo staff want YOU to donate your sunflowers to monkeys...

Keepers at Paignton Zoo are inviting people to donate their sunflowers to monkeys.

Paignton Zoo spokesperson Phil Knowling said: “Keeping staff use sunflower seed heads for enriching the diet of various animals, from macaques and other monkeys to agoutis and porcupines. We’re asking anyone who is growing sunflowers to let us have the seed heads. It’s a great way for gardeners to help a wildlife charity and provide the animals with a locally-grown treat.”

People are invited to bring their cut seed heads to the Zoo by 29th September for weighing. “Whoever brings in the largest sunflower head will win the chance to see it given to some of the animals, plus an animal adoption of your choice. All the seed heads we receive will be given to the monkeys – so everyone benefits!”

In 2006, pupils from Kingsbridge Primary School grew sunflower heads weighing over 2 kilos.
