Do young offenders need more help?
YOUNG people who are released from police custody need more help and support, according to a children’s charity.
The charity Barnardo’s think that the Government would save a lot
of money if more was done to support young offenders once they were released.
In 2009-2010 more than 4,000 young offenders were sent to Barnardo’s after leaving custody. Some of the offenders are as young as 13 and the charity are concerned that they get caught in a cycle of re-offending. They believe a lot of money could be saved if the young offenders had somewhere safe to go and live after being released. Many young offenders end up suffering from depression or are sent back
to families who cannot cope with their needs.
The Government has said that they will encourage all councils to do more to help.
