Cumbria shooting kills 12

People living in Cumbria are coming to terms with the devastation after a man shot dead 12 people.

Derrick Bird, a taxi driver from Whitehaven, went out in his car with his gun and shot some people he knew and others he didn’t. 12 people lost their lives and eight more were badly injured. After his shooting spree, Derrick Bird killed himself. His body was found by police in woods.

Among the victims were Derrick Bird’s twin brother, David, the family’s solicitor, Kevin Commons, and a fellow taxi driver, Darren Rewcastle. The other nine people who died seemed to have been chosen randomly.

An investigation is now taking place to try to work out why a quiet man should cause so much destruction.

Derrick’s family are in shock over the actions of a man his sons describe as “the nicest man you could ever meet”.

Last weekend more than 1,500 people attended memorial services to remember the victims in Whitehaven and Seascale.
