Compton gang members play their first Australian cricket match
The LA suburb of Compton, a crime-heavy area notorious for its gangs, is also the home of a successful cricket club who played their first Australian match yesterday.
Brothers Ricardo and Emidio Cazarez of the Homies and Popz club poses at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, Australia.
Yesterday, the team played and lost to Sydney University at Sydney University cricket oval No. 2.
Geoff De Mesquita, Cricket Operations Manager at the University of Sydney, said of the team: "They chased every ball hard and took some good catches, supporting each other with good mateship.
"It's not often you get an opportunity to host this type of event, given the background of the touring team.
"However it turned out to be a great day, with our team playing the match in the right spirit.
"We were pleased to be part of this initiative and also to be able to promote the game of cricket in this way and to promote the University."
The Homies and Popz club was formed to provide an alternative to gang activities that ruled their Compton neighbourhoods.
They are the first American team to tour Australia and plan to play three matches in Sydney and three more in Melbourne, as well as taking part in various fundraising activities specially helping raise funds for Australian flood victims.
