Children go to 10 Downing Street to campaign for clean water in Mali

Twelve 10 year pupils from Craneswater Junior School in Southsea knocked on the Prime Minister’s door on Wednesday 13t July to present 90 letters written by their classmates, demanding more to be done to help children in Africa who have to walk miles every day to get water.

Craneswater Junior School took part in Oxfam Water Week (11 - 17 July), along with hundreds of other schools across the UK. Water Week is a brand new and unique initiative from Oxfam, which offers teachers learning resources about the importance of water to the lives of people in the developing world, and fundraising and campaigning activities to go alongside the educational side of the project.

This is the first time that a charity has offered the full package of education, campaigning and fundraising events to schools, and the response has been fantastic in WaterWeek’s first year, with over 2,000 schools signed up to take part.

The inspirational efforts of pupils at Craneswater will make a difference to the lives of people thousands of miles away in Mali – the funds raised will go directly to Oxfam’s water projects in Mali, making a clear connection between the money raised and what the children learn during the week.

Richard Paul King, a former teacher now working for Oxfam, explains: “We are providing schools with educational resources to help them make a real difference to the lives of children in Mali -  through learning the real meaning of ‘water vulnerability’, by fundraising and by encouraging pupils to influence the government’s approach to global water issues through campaigning.”
