Chelsea smash British transfer record for Torres

Chelsea smash British transfer record for Torres

Big-spending Chelsea have signed Fernando Torres from Liverpool for a massive £50m.

Although Chelsea have said that they want to get away from the days of big-money signings, their poor recent form has caused them to have a change of heart. Torres had asked to leave Liverpool after becoming frustrated with their form and lack of transfer activity to improve the squad.

The previous transfer record between two British clubs was set back in 2002, when Man United paid Leeds £31.1m for Rio Ferdinand.

Worldwide, only three players have ever been sold for more than £50m – Cristiano Ronaldo (Man Utd to Real Madrid, £80m); Zlatan Ibrahimovic (Inter to Barcelona, £56.5m) and Kaka (AC Milan to Real Madrid, £56m).

On the same day that Torres' transfer went through, Liverpool spent all of the proceeds and a bit more to take Andy Carroll from Newcastle for £35m and Luis Suarez from Ajax for £22.7m.
