Caroline lives in Uganda where the water is dangerous to drink. Read her story.

Name: Caroline Age: 10 Lives: Uganda

Caroline’s family used to rely on the lakes for fish and water. But the lakes are very dangerous – they contain bilharzia, a waterborne parasite. Every day, more than 4,000 children die from diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. UNICEF is working to make sure children have access to clean, safe water.

Caroline is suffering from bilharzia for the second time. She gets painful stomach aches, has diarrhoea, and her stomach is bloated.

UNICEF has provided rainwater tanks for Caroline’s school and is working to provide alternative safe water sources for her community. UNICEF has been teaching children in Caroline’s school about the dangers of drinking dirty water.

Caroline is ambitious and has plans for when she grows up. Caroline says: “I want to be a nurse because they give injections and make people well.”

UNICEF thinks it is wrong Caroline and many other children like her don’t have access to clean water. We are asking Prime Minister David Cameron to put this right. You can ask him too at: www.unicef.org.uk/fair1
