Canada makes history at the winter olympics by breaking "most golds" world record
The host nation Canada has become the most successful country ever at an Olympic Winter Games. Their 14 gold medals beat the previous record by one.
Canada won four more gold medals than Germany, who finished second in the medal table. The USA and Norway both finished with nine golds. Britain finished in 19th place, thanks to Amy Williams’ gold medal in the skeleton. That was the only medal that the UK won.
However, some countries prefer to go by total medals. In that way, the USA would top the table because they won 37 overall. Germany were next, with 30, and Canada were third with 26. Britain’s one medal would put us in joint 24th in that table, along with Estonia and Kazakhstan.
Canada’s 14 medals beat the record that had been jointly held by Norway and the USSR (the former name for Russia and the countries that have since split from it).
Probably the two most important Canadian golds came in the ice hockey, where their men and women both beat their great rivals from the USA in the finals. The women won 2-0, but the men were taken to sudden-death overtime after their match finished 2-2. Canadian superstar Sidney Crosby scored the golden goal, and gave Canada their record 14th gold of the Games.
Canadian figure skater Joannie Rochette deserved special praise, because she won a bronze medal just days after the sudden death of her mother from a heart attack.
“I really didn’t feel like skating,” she said. “I’m glad I did it because in ten years when the pain has gone away a little bit, I would have wished I had skated. That’s one of the reasons why I did it, and I know that’s what my mom would have wanted me to do.”
