Cameron and Clegg to form a Government

Cameron and Clegg to form a Government

David Cameron and Nick Clegg have made a historic deal to work together to govern the UK.

The Conservative leader David Cameron will be the new Prime Minister, while Liberal Democrats leader Nick Clegg will be his deputy. It is very unusual for two parties to work together like this in the UK, and it hasn't happened for 70 years. However, other countries run perfectly well with a so-called 'coalition government'.

A coalition is needed because no party got an overall majority in the General Election. This new coalition means that the Government will be able to make crucial decisions without other parties defeating their proposals in the House of Commons.

The Conservatives and Lib Dems do not agree on many issues, but they will have to make compromises for their Government to work. For instance, the Lib Dems wanted to scrap the Trident submarine-based nuclear defence programme, but they have had to agree to keep it.

The Lib Dems want to change the way that General Elections work and the Conservatives have agreed to allow a referendum (a public vote) on using the Alternative Vote system instead. However, the Conservatives will be allowed to campaign against the idea.

Conservatives and Lib Dems will both have seats in the cabinet, the top group of MPs who run the Government's departments.

The Labour party will now be the main opposition in the House of Commons, and it is the first time since 1997 that they have not been in power. Gordon Brown's resignation means that there will be a leadership election for the head of the Labour party.

Below is a video of David Cameron welcoming Nick Clegg into number 10 Downing Street as they work out the details of the new coalition.

This is really bad. I was counting on the Lib Dems to make a coalition with the Labour Party. It would have been the best for our country and the Conservatives just don't care. This is terrible and I can't beleive this has happendd after all that hung parliment business.

I disagree great neemtree... the conservative party is what this country needs- we need to be sorted out. The labour party pretend to care but end up being hypocrites and getting our country in a mess. xx You are entitled to your views but i think it will benifit our country x

What? David Cameron as Prime Minister is the best thing that could happen!! Neemtree, I'm just checking that you know that Gordon Brown has resigned, so Nick can't work with him now. I'm not being offensive, but I think you should know that the country is in the best hands with David as Prime Minister.

Hooray! This is not what I wanted, but at least it is second best. I wanted Nick Clegg to the prime minister, but him being deputy is just fine by me. And, at least it means Gordon Brown has left!! Also, the Saturday school rumour is false. The fact that the Conservatives won doesn't bother me. At least the Liberal Democrats have the deputy!

I am not sure, I kinda like David Cameron but I also kinda like nick Clegg, to be honest it is what the public want, no affence to Nick Clegg, the more of the votes went to David Cameron therefore that means that they want David Cameron to be prime minister.

Wow,I am so surprised I wan ted the Conservatives to win!

  • defleppard (Age 13) wrote on Wednesday, 19 May 2010 @ 08:24

Thank Goodness Nick Clegg decided to go with the Conservatives! I think it would have been unfair anyway if Liberal Democrats went with Labour because then the 2nd and 3rd place parties would be government when the 1st place Conservatives (who after all kind of won) would not get a chance.

I hate the Conservatives! They hads their chance 20 years ago. Now they have a cure for all our problems when they claimed the same thing 20 years ago. The Liberal Democrats should have had the most votes because they don't waste their time posting bad comments about other groups. They just get on with their work.
