By the time you reach around 30 years old there will be no ice in the Arctic Ocean

By the time you reach around 30 years old there will be no ice in the Arctic Ocean during the summer months, says a polar scientist.

A few months ago First News reported on Pen Hadow and his team trekking across the Arctic measuring the thickness of the ice there.

Their measurements have been analysed by scientists and the findings are astonishing. In just ten years’ time there will be little ice in the Arctic Ocean in the summer months. In 20 years there will be no ice at all during summer.

Although some ice covers Greenland, much of the ice in the Arctic Circle sits on water, not land.

Pen Hadow is shocked that his measurements show the ice is in such serious decline, he says: “In my lifetime we’re looking at changing how the planet looks from space.”
