Bullfighting banned in parts of spain

It’s big news because bullfighting is a national tradition that has been going on for hundreds of years.
But, now, north-east Spain (an area called Catalonia) has become the first region to ban the sport for being cruel and outdated.
The move followed protests by animal rights activists who created a petition, signed by 180,000 people, calling for a ban. After a debate, 68 members of the parliament in Catalonia, which includes Barcelona, voted for the ban. It was enough to change the law with the ban coming into force in 2012.
Supporters of bullfighting say it’s an important Spanish tradition that’s worth keeping.  But bullfighting has become less popular. The protestors say most of the spectators are tourists.
A bullfight typically lasts about 20 minutes, and the bull is stabbed numerous times before it is killed in the bullring.
Now the animal rights activists are hoping other regions will ban bullfighting too.
