Buckingham Palace to become a hotel?

The Queen’s home, Buckingham Palace, could be turned into a hotel and museum, claims a new book.

The Prince of Wales, Prince Charles, has said he might not live in the palace when he becomes king, says the BBC’s Andrew Marr in the book, called The Diamond Queen.

He says Prince Charles is thinking about moving his royal court to Windsor Castle instead.

Under the idea, Buckingham Palace would be turned into a historic hotel and events centre for the Government’s use. However, a spokesman for the royal family denied there were any plans for a move away from Buckingham Palace.

Mr Marr has spent years following the Queen on foreign trips and in her official duties around Britain. He is also working on three television programmes for next June’s Diamond Jubilee, which marks the Queen’s historic 60 years on the throne.

The Prince of Wales became heir to the throne at the age of three when his grandfather, George VI, died in 1952 and his mother became Queen.

If the Queen stays on the throne until September 2015, she will become the longest reigning monarch in British history, even longer than the reign of Queen Victoria.

The Diamond Jubilee on 2 June will start a special four-day bank holiday weekend.

The late May bank holiday will move to Monday 4 June while the Government has created an extra “nationwide celebration” bank holiday on Tuesday 5 June.

Many grand events are also being organised, including the largest river pageant since the reign of Charles II, when the Queen will travel in a Royal Barge leading a flotilla of more than 1,000 boats down the Thames.

I don't believe that that should happen.

I am really not surprised! If you think about it, it might do quite well because there were so many tourists at the Royal Wedding so this would probably go down a storm!

I think that they should not make it a hotel because where would the Queen live in London?

  • princessKG (Age 10) wrote on Wednesday, 2 November 2011 @ 10:55

mags5, well Charles would only be the King when Elizabeth II dies, so she will not need anywhere to stay

  • Zoeangel (Age 13) wrote on Wednesday, 2 November 2011 @ 16:57

I think it would feel strange lying in bed there knowing Queen Elizabeth and other Kings and Queens had sleept there!

  • nadialala (Age 12) wrote on Thursday, 3 November 2011 @ 10:03

I don't think it's such a good idea because to turn the place into a hotel they will obviously have to make loads of big changes to it, so chances are it won't look at all like Buckingham Palace at all in the end. I would rather stay in a normal hotel, save some money and see the REAL Buckingham Palace from the outside.

  • zanadu (Age 12) wrote on Thursday, 3 November 2011 @ 17:30

Its an ok idea for starters. It might be a good idea to open as an museum tour but if it opens as a hotel, then it would not work because Buckingham Palace is one of the most famous Palaces in the world and only the rich would be able to stay because of the price.

  • LethalCorn (Age 12) wrote on Thursday, 3 November 2011 @ 18:11

it must be for very very very VERY rich people.

  • HaloChief (Age 12) wrote on Thursday, 3 November 2011 @ 21:30

No i dont think it should be a hotel because it should stay just for the royal family

  • DizzyGirl (Age 11) wrote on Tuesday, 8 November 2011 @ 21:19

y wood u trn buckingham palace nto a hotel???!!!

  • Nordica (Age 11) wrote on Monday, 14 November 2011 @ 19:10

No, that's the worst idea ever it's a brilliant palace it will get ruined and wrecked if they turn it into a hotel

  • shoeless27 (Age 10) wrote on Tuesday, 15 November 2011 @ 18:53

I don't think it should be turned into a hotel, because it's history goes back a long time and for excited visitors and tourists to trash it...
