Smarties - not a good filling for a sandwich
Smarties - not a good filling for a sandwich

Boy sent to school with a Smarties sandwich

A school in Lincolnshire are reviewing their pupils packed lunches after a boy brought in a Smarties sandwich.

Health workers in Lincolnshire were sent it to look at pupils' lunch boxes are it was revealed that Lincolnshire has one of the highest childhood obesity rates in the country.

When they looked at the pupils' packed lunches, they were horrified to find that most contained junk food, and one child was even eating Smarties sandwiches!

Lynne McNiven, assistant director of public health, said: "When we heard about the Smarties sandwich, it was horrifying.

"We went into the schools to have a look and found the children eating what I would class as picnics, the sort of lunch you might have once in a while as a treat, but this was every day, five days a week, 20 days a month."

After seeing what the children were being sent to school with, the heath workers reccomended that Lincolnshire schools started a trial offering free healthy school meals, like jacket potatoes, served with cutlery.

Ms McNiven says that since the trial started, pupils have become better behaved, and their handwriting has improved: "Switching to a proper dining experience worried some of the schools, as teachers were concerned lunches would take longer to get through, but they have found it a good experience showing the pupils how to eat properly," she said.

"When the youngsters started the free school meals, their behaviour and concentration improved dramatically, and so did their writing.

"Holding a knife and fork and using them to eat with helped with their fine motor skills and also equips them for life as well.

"Many of the children, even those at secondary school, were eating every- thing with their fingers and had never sat down to a formal meal when they had to use a knife and fork.

"One little girl didn’t even know how to use a spoon because all her meals were finger food at home."

What do you think about this? Should parents be given 'lunch box lessons'? Should school meals be free? What is the unhealthiest thing that you've ever seen in a lunch box?

Yes, school meals should be free! So that the children will have a better diet. And the unhealthiest thing i've ever seen in a lunchbox? Umm.. funnily enough, smarties! It was fun at school once though, as a special treat we were given smarties to do maths with, and got to eat them after! People kept asking us where we got the smarties from! XD

Someone in my year has jam sandwiches every day but doesn't even eat them! I don't think parents should have lunchbox lessons because I presume they can do what they want with their lunchboxes! Same, Sambarose, exactly the same :D

I think that school's should definitely provide children with free lunch. A smarties sandwich? Ewwwww!!!!! The unhealthiest thing I've ever seen in a lunch box is a chocolate muffin that my friend had. She gave me a bit too - and it was delicious!
