Blue Peter presenter, Helen Skelton, is past the halfway mark on her Amazon journey for Sport Relief
The Blue Peter presenter Helen Skelton is now past the halfway point of her epic 2,010 mile (3,235km) journey down the Amazon for Sport Relief.
Helen has absolutely smashed the previous record for the longest solo kayak journey. That was 326.98 miles (526.22km), set by Daniel Bloor in 2006. So Helen has now more than tripled the previous record!
Helen will also have another world record, as the Guinness people have made a new category for her. That is the longest distance in a kayak in 24 hours by a woman, and Helen managed a whopping 75 miles (121km).
“One thousand miles down, one thousand miles to go,” said Helen. “I know I’ve got a lot of hard work still to do but at least I am closer to the end than the beginning now. Every single day here is tough, so all I can do is take each one at a time and get through it. I have been suffering with the heat, my shoulders are sore and my legs are covered in mosquito bites, but I’m battling on.”
All of us here at First News wish Helen the best of luck, and hope that the last 1,000 miles aren’t too painful!
Plenty of other sports stars and celebrities have been helping to raise money for Sport Relief. Welsh snooker star Dominic Dale (right) recently set a new record for the quickest mile around a snooker table.
Dale’s time of 12mins 47secs was five and a half minutes better than the time that Mark Selby set in 2008. So either Dale is super-fit or Selby just wasn’t trying.
The mile involved 113 laps around a full-size snooker table, and Dale swapped between clockwise and anti-clockwise, to stop himself getting dizzy.
Fearne Cotton (above left) has also been doing her bit, and has been in training for The BT Sport Relief Million Pound Bike Ride. Along with fellow celebs such as David Walliams, Jimmy Carr and Davina McCall, Fearne will be part of a relay bike ride from John O’ Groats to Land’s End. Although she admitted that she’s not the best rider in the world…
“I fell off twice,” she said after training. “I’ve got bruises all over. The first time I was going so slowly that I just basically fell over in slow motion. The second time, a car was coming and I panicked and tried to get my feet out of the clips the wrong way. I just fell into a ditch and bruised my knee.”
