Beth Tweddle wins gold

Beth Tweddle has won the European uneven bars title for the third year in a row.

Tweddle wowed the judges with a brand new routine at the Artistic Gymnastics European Championships in Berlin, Germany. The judges gave her a mark of 15.100, which put her just ahead of Russia’s Tatiana Nabieva.

“The main feeling coming off today is relief!” said Tweddle. “I knew what I needed to do, and although it wasn’t perfect, it was good enough.”

In the last two championships, Tweddle has won gold on both the uneven bars and floor. She couldn’t quite repeat that this year, though, only managing to finish in fourth place on the floor. An injury to her calf and Achilles heel had prevented Tweddle from training fully and she even considered pulling out of the event.

The British team came home with one more medal, after Dan Purvis finished in joint third in the all-around final.

“It actually wasn’t my best day today,” he said, “but importantly I went clean with no major errors and that consistency saw me through.”
