Are hedgehogs being affected by climate change?
Wildlife charities in the UK are trying to discover if hedgehogs are being affected by climate change and they need YOUR help to do it!
A retired hedgehog expert has teamed up with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society and the People’s Trust for Endangered Species to see if the change in temperature is affecting the animals.
Hedgehog numbers have fallen in the last 50 years, mainly due to building developments in their habitats, but climate change could be another important factor.
Hedgehogs hibernate in winter, and warmer winters could see them wake up from hibernation earlier than they should and before there is enough food for them to eat. Sudden frosts and cold spells will also make it hard for them to feed.
It is also bad news for it to be too warm when they are hibernating.
You can register to be involved in the online project, which asks you to record your observations about hedgehog activity in your local area. Sign up now at www.hedgehogstreet.org.
