Amir Khan has lost his two world title belts

Amir Khan has lost his two world title belts, after some controversial refereeing decisions led to him losing on points.

The Bolton fighter took on America’s Lamont Peterson in Washington DC, but lost out on points after the match went the full 12 rounds.

Khan had a point taken off him in two separate rounds, as local referee Joseph Cooper said that Khan had pushed Peterson away illegally. Two of the three judges scored Khan as losing by just one point, which means that the deducted points cost him the match.

Most commentators criticised the decisions, but seemed to agree that Khan should have done better to follow up his early advantage. He had Peterson on the canvas in the first round, but the American gradually started to come back into it.

Although a date hasn’t been set yet, it seems certain that the two fighters will have a rematch early next year.

In the future, Khan eventually hopes to move up a division to welterweight and fight the current WBC champion, Floyd Mayweather Jr, who is still undefeated after 42 fights.
