A Native American is made a saint for the first time

The Catholic church has made a Native American a saint for the first time.

Kateri Tekakwitha was a Native American from the Mohawk tribe who lived in the 17th century.

People think that she is a saint because lots of amazing things happened to her during her lifetime and she is said to have performed several 'miracles'.

The Vatican - the head of the Catholic church - need to see proof of two miracles before someone can be called a saint.

Pope Benedict XVI has said that these two things count as miracles:

2. When Kateri died age 24 all her smallpox scars vanished and all the sick people in the room were healed

3. An 11-year-old boy dying from flesh-eating bacteria was 'cured' when his family prayed to Kateri.

Kateri suffered from a lot of tragedy in her lifetime. When she was four she survived a smallpox plague which killed both her parents and left her nearly blind with terrible scars. She later survived an attack by French raiders who killed a lot of people from her village.

When she was 20 Kateri, whose last name means 'the clumsy one' was baptised and became a Christian. She spent the next four years of her life helping sick people before she died.

I think saints are just people who happened to be there at the right time and happened to be very lucky.

It's a bit like the gameshow Take It Or Leave It. You have to be in the sin bin at the right time but also playing for money at the right time. Becoming a saint requires luck. winning cash on take it or leave it requires luck. Less luck than becoming a saint, but you still need luck. And brains. Actually, what does this have to do with saints?
